Some things matter. Some things don’t. Ultimately, what you pay attention to – what you focus on – will direct your steps.
Where are you headed? I think now is the perfect time, if you don’t already have a good idea, to find out. Don’t you?
Think about giving up to this point this year. Consider giving for the entire year last year. When you and your team look at these numbers, what exactly are you looking for? Did you grow your giving? Are you hitting your giving goals? Are you retaining and regaining givers?
How do you know?
The reality is that unless you’re looking at the big picture and paying attention to the correct numbers – you don’t.
Think of your ministry as a patient going to the doctor for their annual well-check. This sets the tone for what I refer to as the Yearly Scorecard. All numbers directly connected to the sustainability and growth of the organization are the vitals. Everything else, all other details, are simply noise.
Like blood pressure and cholesterol, some figures you want to note for your organization include:
- New donors
- Overall donors
- Donors regained
- Giving YTD
- Increases and decreases from previous to current year
- Long-term Giving commitments
Using this as a springboard, you’re able to jump into meaningful analysis with your team to determine how healthy your ministry truly is.
Having a realistic picture allows for an accurate assessment to determine strengths to be celebrated from your team’s efforts, which I believe to be essential. Furthermore, you’re able to identify any areas of weakness requiring extra attention and care without making assumptions or being led by gut inclinations.
I hope this invigorates you and encourages you. You CAN do this! You WILL be able to use true stats to assess where you are and uncover areas needing work to get you to where you want to grow!
