Training your body is just as important in leadership than any other training you need to be successful. Are you training your body the way that you should?
For my workout today, I have been moving a huge amount of rocks and soil that my wife has for working in the yard. I blocked an hour to do it and I have moved over 3,500 pounds of rock and soil by hand in an hour.
I don’t share that with you to brag. I have a point. I actually didn’t start working out and training my body until I was a little over thirty-five. I wasn’t an athlete growing up and played no traditional sports. I spent my time outside hunting and fishing, so while I was active I was by no means an athlete. I started training and working in 2013 out on my doctor’s recommendations for stress management.
I’ve learned since starting this that you train your body, not just to work out, but so that you can actually do the work that life brings you. Today, for me, that was a huge amount of manual labor.
If you are reading this and you are a leader, it is likely that you do not have a job that requires you to do a lot of manual labor. So, just like I always was, you probably don’t feel the need to train your body.
There is a remarkable leader in the Bible named Joshua. When you read about him, you will learn how strong he was his entire life up until the day he died. This was not by accident. Joshua wasn’t sitting in his office and dealing with email, instead he was active and working all the time, preparing for battles, fighting in battles, and recovering from battles.
If you are a leader and you have a lot of pressures and stress in your work, and I am sure that you do, one of the best things that you can do to be ready to handle the stresses of life is to train your body. I call this getting ‘Joshua Strong.’
Again, maybe you don’t have a lot of manual labor in your life. I don’t usually have to move 3,500 pounds on a Saturday with only an hour to do it, but the work of a leader does bring a tremendous amount of pressures, stresses, and fatigue. You need your body built up to be ready and have the energy to face it.
You’ve got to be ready and available to really live out what God brings for you.
It is not just about being thin, being fit, or being healthy. Although, those are all of the right things and benefits. It is about being ready for what life is going to bring you, and being able to handle that with excellence and endurance.
