Referrals Fuel Success

by Zach Clark

I often receive questions about how to approach referrals.

You always want to follow up. Leaders are network builders and connection makers.

Should you call, or should you wait for an introduction?

If no one answers, do you leave a message? Call back? Or none of the above?

This person may not recognize your number or voice. Is that a problem?

In today’s world, though caller ID is a given, always leave a voicemail. Some people say don’t, but I believe it’s rude in today’s culture not to. The referral can see someone has called, so leave a voicemail.

What should that voicemail sound like? Try this on for size, or personalize it until you feel it reflects your tone and intention.

“Hey, this is Francie. I co-lead a ministry called Gen 225. I don’t believe we have met before, but so and so suggested I give you a call because they thought you would enjoy hearing about our ministry and the impact we are having. You came to their mind for whatever reason, so I just wanted to follow up and schedule a visit via phone or face-to-face if you would be willing to invest some time in me.”

You are taking a chance; there is no guarantee they will call back.

Wait a week and call again. Wait a couple of weeks and call again. Wait six weeks and call again. Keep lengthening the time between contacts. If you have called a couple of times but have not heard back, you might circle back with the person who referred them.

Let them know you have been following up but haven’t been able to reach them yet, and ask them if they have any suggestions. There’s a reason you came to mind and a purpose in your ministry.

Reactivate their thought process and let them know you’re open to suggestions on approaching the referral more conducive to their style, availability, etc.

I would love to hear from you on your success with this. Click here to add yourself to my personal address book and text me.
