The Weekly Scorecard Breakdown
How good are you with directions?
I don’t mean active listening to complete a task … I mean getting from point A to point B.
I’m lucky enough to travel for engagements all over the U.S., often finding myself in new territory with a tight schedule to keep. Thank goodness the Lord blessed us with GPS!
It’s fascinating, really, when you look at how these contraptions work.
There is so much behind the scenes we do not see. I can sit in my car, open my app, and plug in the address. Presto! Directions with an alternate route are instantly available, including notes on travel time and traffic delays.
But the app isn’t guessing – it’s using a GPS: global positioning system, a specific network of satellites communicating to establish a direct route to a specific location on earth.
It’s using numbers.
Latitude and longitude, precise coordinates, ensure I end up at a Chik-fil-A in St. Louis rather than Boca Raton.
Your organization has a powerful tool at its fingertips and may not even know it. You have a GPS – Giving Potential System. It’s time to identify the coordinates.
Leading or Trailing?
I want you to imagine a group of children walking in a line. The caboose, the little one bringing up the rear, can tell you where they’ve been. It’s the child at the front who can tell you where they’re about to go.
One of the pitfalls I see advancement leaders fall into is using giving totals for the entire year to show them where the ministry stands this week.
In short, this is a defense mechanism.
Stop.
The sooner you’re realistic about where you stand, the sooner you’ll begin to climb.
Polaroid or 35mm?
Polaroid film mesmerized me. In just seconds the captured moment was ready for review unlike film rolls sent out for developing. It was the selfie of the seventies.
Weekly, I want you looking at four numbers. Just four. But I want live, in this moment numbers.
These numbers are all in terms of face-to-face meetings with donors.
- Number of Reserved Meetings
- Number of Reserved Meetings Scheduled
- Number of Meetings Held in the Past Week
- Number of Follow-Ups
Collecting, monitoring, comparing these numbers will hold you accountable and provide a real-time, realistic picture of why your previous week went the way it did and how your upcoming week is likely to play out.
I look forward to seeing what you and your team do with this guidance. I love being on this journey with your ministry. Keep me posted and let me know of questions you have along the way!
